Major and Minor requirements

In order to declare a major or minor in Asian Studies, students are required to meet with the advisor. Asian Studies is an open major, 
meaning that you don't have to apply or take any prerequisites to declare. 

 

major requirements: 33 credits

  • Two foundational courses (choose two)
    • MID E 1000: Intro to Middle East
    • MID E 1545: Islamic Origins & Empires
    • MID E 1546: Modern Period
    • MID E 3001: Exploring the Middle East 
  • Area Electives
    •  Complete 18 credits of upper-division area studies electives
  • Language Emphasis: Arabic or Persian
    • ARAB/PERS 3010
    • ARAB/PERS 3020 
  • Signature Experience
    • Complete 3 credits by participating in a study abroad, internship, Model Arab League, or other experience related to the Middle East approved by the advisor.

Notes: No more than 3 credits from a Hinckley internship may count toward your major.

Grade Requirements: All major courses must be taken for a minimum letter grade of C  or better.

Honors Degree (HBA) in Middle East Studies

To graduate with an Honors Degree in Middle East Studies students must complete 7 additional courses designated by the Honors College and complete an Honors Thesis/Project. Students interested in an Honors degree should meet with an advisor in the Honors College to review program requirements and then meet with the Academic Advisor for Middle East Studies to declare an HBA in Middle East Studies.
